Alert Messages
Some alerts you may receive, and their meanings:
unknown host - KnightGuard.Net was unable to resolve the IP
Address of your server. If the URL is valid, this indicates that KnightGuard.Net
was unable to convert the Site Name into an IP address, required for
setting up browser connections. Name Servers servers generally take
care of this, and the problem could reside with either KnightGuard.Net's
Name Server or with your site's Name Server.
cant connect - KnightGuard.Net was unable to establish an
HTTP connection with the requested server. DNS resolved OK, but your
server could not be reached to request a page.
retrieved too slow - The URL you requested to be monitored
was retrieved successfully, but not within the timeframe set by your
desired sensitivity.
page/title error - When KnightGuard.Net downloads your page
for the first time, it remembers the page title, contained between
<TITLE> tags in your HTML document. On subsequent retrievals,
if the page title differs from the current one, you receive an alert
that the title changed.
The most common reason you'll get this message (asside from when
the title actually does change due to a change in title) is when the
server sends back a page other than the one you expected or the complete
page cannot be retrieved properly. This can happen when the monitored
page is temporarily unavailable, or if only a portion of the page
was downloaded but for some reason, the connection errored out and
the complete page could not be retrieved. In the first case, the server
sends back a "Page Unknown" or "Error 404" error.
In the second case, the TITLE may not be able to be extracted from
the page. In both cases, you'll receive two alerts: One when the "Page
Unknown" or "partial" page is served (because the title
of this page is different), the second when the monitored page is
again available (again, the page title is different from the last
time it was checked).
You may also receive this error if your page is your page title is
dynamically generated. Each time the title changes you'll receive
an alert. If this is the case, we recommend creating a dummy static
page on your site which can be used for monitoring.
What to do if you are alerted
If you receive an alert - DON'T PANIC. One alert does not necessarily
mean trouble. But it is a call to action. If you are alerted, always
check the site yourself. There are instances when your site may
be unavalable for a short time (like during a maintenance window or
system reboot), and because KnightGuard.Net is continually checking,
we're more likely to catch it than someone browsing.
If you are not in a position to check the site yourself, see if you
can call someone who can do it for you. If you can't find someone and
you need to know, call your provider or technical support staff so they
can check it out. If you can wait - wait 15 minutes or so - till the
next time KnightGuard.Net checks if for you. If you receive two consecutive
alerts, you can be fairly confident that there is a problem, and you
need to contact your provider or technical support staff to get on it
ASAP.
